I am a Chilean doctoral candidate pursuing a dual degree in Sociology and History. I have a Professional degree in Sociology from the Universidad de Chile; a Master in Political Sciences and International Relations from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; and a Master of Arts in Sociology from Michigan State University. My current research involves the intersection of history and biography in the migration process from the Southern Cone of America to the United States. While in Chile I worked as a consultant and research assistant for the International Organization for Migration in Chile and for the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (CELADE). At MSU my involvement with research has been on topics of globalization, demography and international migration with Dr. Brendan Mullan and on topics of contemporary urban history in Chile with Dr. Edward Murphy. I received a Fulbright-Conicyt fellowship (2005-2009), the All-University Excellence in Teaching award (2011) as well as several other highly competitive fellowships at MSU. I have taught sociology and history related courses in universities in Chile and at MSU and I am also interested in the pedagogical implications of using cinema in teaching sociology and history. I have presented my research at a variety of national and international conferences and I am fluent in Spanish (native speaker) and English and can read Portuguese and have a basic knowledge of spoken French.

Hello. My name is Josh Vertalka. I grew up in Northern Michigan. I just completed my Master’s Thesis, which focused on adapting airports in juxtaposition with surrounding communities to the extreme social and physical negativities associated with meteorological hazards. After receiving my Masters Degree I joined Michigan State’s Geography Department with interests centering on urban cities, extreme events, and mega events. These interests sparked from a number of critical events including my study abroad experiences in South Korea, China, and Japan. My recent research involves the spread of the 1918 influenza pandemic in British India and adapting airports to meteorological hazards. I am excited to begin researching various urban issues with Global Urban Studies Department.

I am in the second and final year of the Master's of Public Policy (MPP) program here at MSU, with a specialization in Global Urban Studies. My focus is on urban public policy, and I am especially interested in urban economic development, international development, and municipal government. I recently completed a project looking at living conditions in slums in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo, and am currently working on my Master's Thesis looking at strategies for improving living conditions in slums. Before coming to MSU I received my Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Calvin College, and spent a year interning with Opportunity International in Chicago and InterAction in Washington, DC. As a research assistant I have put my Spanish fluency to use working for Dr. Reese collecting Mexican census data and literature on Mexico's Federal District. I have also devoted significant time to helping build and manage a database of municipal indicators for Michigan cities.
