 Hourani addresses UN

Professor Najib Hourani (Anthropology, Global Urban Studies Program) delivered a lecture at the United NationsHeadquarters in New York in August 2018. At the invitation of the Department of Political Affairs and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations' Middle East and North Africa Section Dr. Hourani discussed Lebanon's experience with post-conflict reconstruction and the lessons it holds for Syria today. His talk centered on three main questions. First, what are the political and economic challenges that face countries emerging from extended periods of civil war? Second, at what stage should the international community enter emerging post-conflict environments? Most importantly, what kinds of engagement might support a positive peace in Syria and reconstruction processes that prioritize human needs? In attendance were officials from the Secretary General's Office, the Security Council Secretariat and Sanctions Committees, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Development Program, the Department of Political Affairs and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Trained in Political Science (NYU 2005) Dr. Hourani's research on war, civil conflict and urban reconstruction in Lebanon appears in Geopolitics, Human Organization, The Journal of Urban Affairs, Middle East Critique and Middle East Policy.
